GROW

Connecting with Earth via grass and outdoors has not been a strong suit of mine throughout this human experience. I could never be apart of the Earth nation - no matter how cool lava bending is. Something had been nagging at me to properly learn how to garden. Was this apart of deep need to be prepared for some sort of doomsday or is it just a new hobby?! Maybe neither maybe both but having the know how to grow food screams to me as a life skill anyone should know.

I started mentally preparing for this journey during the winter months. I'd taken a trip to Home Depot for some unrelated items and noticed some not yet ripened fruit trees in front of the store. Seeing the trees ignited a spark within me. A spark of an internal dialogue that let me know I'd better get started learning about this process if I were going to have any sort of harvest this year. After few google searches and plenty of blogs later I'd decided it was time to plan.

I wanted food that my family and I would actually eat! I wanted things like leafy greens, peppers and possibly even our own fruit trees. During my time planning/researching I’d came to know that trees required a bit more energy/planning/effort long term - so I scaled it back to only vegetables.

Spring came so fast it really shocked me. It was time to start buying supplies and I legit had to have a heart to heart with myself….am I really going to get on my knees and shovel in dirt?! As much as I liked learning something new it’s just not realistic for me to garden that way. Where there’s an obstacle I can certainly find an answer so I once again took to Google and even YouTube to find some solutions. How could I still garden but not sacrifice my knees to the dirt?! A raised planters box that's how!!!

With any new adventure I tend to create a bunch of seemingly unnecessary anxiety to not only pump myself up to officially start this but also to analyze the risks. What put me at ease are some of the TikTok creators that had been graciously placed on my For You page by that lovely algorithm. Watching so many other creators garden, complete DIY projects and just practice everyday things reminded me of what I am truly capable of.

Since planting I have been watering them every day which has been a nice incentive to get some sun on my skin. Now I just have to be patient and wait for them to grow. I'm super proud of this - I at least know that I can be of use in the zombie apocalypse. When my first peppers do finally see the light of day and ripen TikTok will be the first to see it.

If you plant/garden, what are some of your favorite low maintenance things to garden?

Until next time!
